Merry Christmas with music

Hi! It is time for a Christmas break! Happy holidays!
Here's some Finnish Christmas music: two songs,
both composed by Jean Sibelius, the most famous
Finnish composer of classical music.

I played two songs for you with my piano...
The first is called "On hanget korkeat nietokset" and
the second called "En etsi valtaa, loistoa". This
song is about the importance of peace, not
power or glory. Merry Christmas!

White Christmas in Joensuu, Finland?

Since my childhood we have had white Christmas here every year. Normally we have
our first snow in late October (like this year and we had it 25 cm but it melt).

In 1996 (8DEC) and 2000 (16DEC) permanent snow came very late. Normally in
my region the snow depth should be about 30 cm now. But no snow. Average
temperature in December is -7,5C. But this December our temperatures have
varied from 0 to 8C. This is really abnormal. Will this Christmas be my first
without snow?

A pledge of 6000 trees in Cuba!

ENO School in Cuba will plant 6000 trees next year! This will be
their contribution for the better environment and ENO Tree Planting
Campaign (100 000 trees). We received this news from Rafael Méndez,
ENO teacher at Centro Politécnico de Veterinaria Villena – Revolución
in Havana,Cuba.

We will launch this new campaign site by the end of this year.
It is great to hear about the level of commitment already.

Make your pledge!

As you may know we have made a separate pledge
bank for this campaign. You are welcome to make your
pledge to prevent C02 emissions and make a difference
at personal level.

We have received pledges from many countries. As we
challenged the European Commission to take part, here is
a pledge from M.P. Carl, Director-General for Environment:

My pledge: "Europe is determined to tackle climate change
and has the ability to lead the world's efforts by example. With a real sense
of common responsibility and political will we can make this change happen. Decisive
action is needed over the next 10 to 15 years: we must accelerate the change to a low
carbon economy, reverse the continuing increase in global greenhouse gas emissions and
increase our energy security and our energy efficiency. Climate change is therefore
among the top priorities for me personally and for my Commission, and I pledge to work
to ensure that this is reflected in the agenda of the European Union as a whole.
Together
we can make a difference."

M.P. Carl, Director-General for Environment
On behalf of José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission
and Stavros Dimas, Commissioner for Environment

HAVE YOU MADE YOUR PLEDGE? PLEASE DO IT HERE!
